A friend gave me a Sony SACD. SCD XB790 .
It didn't work so I said I'd have it. To cut along story short , 10 weeks testing , spare belts and a lot of hope , it bloody works .
Its a very nice player . My question is ,are sacd worth the price , about ten times , cd about a $5 , sacd about $50.
SACD . Any difference ?

Are they still making SACDs? They didn't take off. I still have a few which will play on odd Sony and Pioneer DVD players, for example. Imho much higher quality repro than CD.
Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.

I do have an older Denon DVD player that has SACD facility.
My knowledge of SACD is limited so anything I say will need qualifying.
Some SACD discs have dual layers, a CD layer and a SACD layer. When playing a genuine SACD an illuminated sign on the display should signify the fact. Does SACD use a different laser, or is that just DVD ?
SACD cannot go through the SPDIF digital output, although if the player has HDMI output I believe there are adaptors to get SACD sound out.
So, if you have a SACD with dual layers it should be easy to see the sound differences.

I've had the loan of a SACD from big001 , for which I am well chuffed.
I'll report back if it makes a difference for me .

Right , I've listened to all tracks on this CD/sacd .
Conclusions.
1. Sacd definitely sounds clearer and louder with more impact. Definition , soundstage appear to be the same.
2. Is this a volume thing ?
4. I'm somewhat sceptical that it was bound to sound better to justify the price . I'm going to purchase a separate police CD only and repeat the comparison.
3. At ten times the current price is ain't worth it .
.4. fuck is it convenient , I've I got to the stage in life were this is what matters. Comparison with vinyl to be undertaken .
